Road Trips can be so much fun but they can also be extremely long and seem to take forever! You may need something to pass the time, so I really enjoy playing games! It can be difficult to play board games in the car, and you can feel sick if you play video games! So an alternative to both of these is playing games that require nothing but another person to play with. These are a few of my favorite games to pass the time of being in the car, they’re all super simple but a whole lot of fun!
Alphabet game: The alphabet is a great game because it can take a long time and get you through a big portion of the trip! The alphabet game is where you have to find a word that starts with each letter of the alphabet and the words can be anywhere. You can find them on cars, billboards, or even road signs. First one who gets through every letter of the alphabet wins the game!
Cows: If you’re going to be traveling through a very country area this is a great game to play. So this game is very simple, any time you see just one cow or a herd of cows you just simply shout Cows! You then get a point, so simple..right?! Something to keep in mind, you don’t get a point for EACH cow you see, it’s a point for each group of cows. So whether you see one cow, or 20 cows, it’s still just 1 point. You play this throughout the whole trip and tally up the points at the end, whoever noticed the most cows wins!
If you aren’t going through a country area, this game can be adapted to anything. Instead of cows, you can play “dogs” or “bikes.” Change it to whatever you want.
I spy: I spy is so simple but so fun. You simply choose an item within the car or whatever location you are in and say “I spy with my little eye ______” Then, whoever you are playing with simply tries to guess what you are looking at. They can ask questions and the game isn’t over until they come up with an answer of what you are “spying.” You can tweak this game depending on the age of kids you are playing with. For younger kids, you can spy more obvious items but with older kids it’s fun to get them thinking. Start spying items that are smaller or requires a bit more work to find. The fun part about this game is that there are no ‘winners’ at the end of it. It can be stopped or started at any time.
20 Questions: Another simple game, and it is really similar to I spy but it is different enough to still be included in this list! So 20 Questions you don’t necessarily need a physical thing for the other person to be guessing, you can just think of anything! (Some examples could be a ferris wheel, mountain, Texas, Shoes, etc) The other person then has 20 chances, they can ask any yes or no questions they would like that will help lead them to the answer!
Name that Song: This is one of my favorite games because I absolutely love music! So basically all you have to do is have someone play a song and then you and the person you’re competing against just simply have to guess what the song is and the first person to guess gets a point! You can have them play just the first 30 seconds of the song for a bit more of a challenging game, or you can just let the song play until the first person guesses it! .
Next road trip you take, be sure to remember these games and you will definitely enjoy yourself a bit more while on that long trip to wherever you are going! Have fun!
