Being on a strict schedule is not my style. Structure is great for some people but it’s one thing that kills my creativity. Having the luxury of working from home is something that is one of the best things ever. To be able to get out of bed, walk 100 feet and be at work is a beautiful thing. At the same time, it’s easy to be distracted so I’ve gathered a few tips that will help when you’re working from home.
Make a list daily of the tasks that need to be completed. Date the list and whatever you don’t finish, add to the next day’s list. After I make the list, I go through it and prioritize which items I should so work on first. Each day is different and very dependent on deadlines.
Close your email tab. Working in a profession where email is very important, this is a hard one. I work with all my clients and customers almost solely by email. I never want to miss an opportunity and I’m constantly receiving emails about work so I usually keep it open all day long. I noticed this is hindering my performance. I get so occupied trying to email people back or searching through my email that it takes away from my work. Instead of spending 15 minutes scouring through my email, I could have been half way done with a blog post.
Get up and move. When you work behind a computer all day, it’s sometimes hard to remember to get up and walk around. Make it a habit to get up at least once every hour. Set your alarm so you remember to get your exercise in. Don’t forget about Newton’s Law – A body at rest stays at rest, and a body in motion stays in motion…
Snack nutritiously. Working from home gets me in the zone. I start working and don’t stop. That is great for productivity but when it’s the middle of the day and you realize you haven’t eaten anything all day long, that’s not a good thing. During my daily alarms that remind me to get up and walk around, I also add “snack” to one of them. It’s a reminder to grab something healthy so I keep going strong through the day.
I’ve always loved Yogurt as a snack and recently discovered Plenti, a yogurt by Yoplait. Plenti is a greek yogurt that comes in all sorts of flavors but it’s packed with whole grain oats, flax and pumkpin seeds. It’s a hearty snack that keeps me full until my next meal. With 12 grams of protein and 12 grams of sugar, vanilla and coconut are among my favorite flavors.
Don’t over do it. I laughed a little bit when I wrote this out because God knows I am horrible with over doing it. Having an office in your home means that you’re always working. There is always something that you can be working on. It’s almost like you are never off of work. I have tried my very best to avoid my office on the weekends to keep myself from working.
