It always seems like it is difficult to keep the pantry organized. Are you always trying to figure out how to organize your pantry? If your pantry is like mine there may be enough in there for an entire meal or two. Trying to keep it organized can seem like a never ending battle. Here are some tips and tricks to try to help get that chaotic pantry under control.
How to Organize Your Pantry
If you like to do small sections at a time just take it one shelf at a time..if your feeling more adventurous empty out the whole pantry and start with a clean slate! Who knows after you get everything out you may find a few things that you can mark off your shopping list because you already have them.
Throw out any trash, stale chips or cookies. If there are can goods in there you don’t think you will ever use then put them aside to donate them to your local food bank.
Wipe down each shelf with a paper towel and disinfectant spray. Be sure to get all the corners sometimes it helps to get the vacuum out to get all those pesky crumbs.
Arrange the items in your pantry by group and not by size. Canned beans with the beans and soups with the soups. To keep canned goods better contained try using an old soda can box, cover it in cute paper and there you have a beautiful container to keep your canned goods organized.
To make it easier to follow the last in, last out rule I cut a hole in the back of the can box on the top to be able to easily slide the new cans in the back of the box. I also like using glass or plastic jars for my pastas and whole grain items. Larger glass containers are great for things like flour, sugar and any other baking goods.
To keep some of your boxed goods together in groups like cake mixes check out your local dollar store for some great deals on baskets. Containers are also great for keeping out unwanted bugs or animals from your foods. They also help some items such as cereal stay fresh longer if the containers have seals.
Labels are great for all your containers. You can get a label maker at Walmart or just make your own handmade labels for all your containers. (If you’re feeling adventurous, make chalkboard labels so you can change the words.) Keep the labels large enough to read so you don’t have to pull everything out to read each label. This will help save time when looking for certain items in the pantry. You can also label the shelves by category to help keep you on track when putting groceries away.
When your home from a shopping trip and your restocking your pantry be sure to put the newer items in the back. Another great idea is to keep a notepad and pen close to the pantry to write down items your running low on.
